What Is The Best Dog Food - My Ratings

Deciding on the type of dog food you provide is one of the most important decisions you will ever make for your puppy or older dog. Dog food nutrition directly influences every aspect of your dog's life. Things like how puppies grow, their behavior habits, health, overall well-being and appearance are all closely connected to the nutrition we provide - it's a big responsibility.

With all the recent publicity and concern with the dog food recall of 2008 the spotlight has been aimed fairly and squarely at the big commercial dog food companies. Us dog lovers are finally becoming more aware and educated about providing wholesome, nutritionally balanced meals for our dogs. So where do we start in our search to find the best dog food? What are our options, and who can we trust or even believe?

Is "Premium Dog Food" the answer we've been searching for or "Natural Dog Food" or how about "Healthy Dog Food"? Maybe the best dog foods are "Holistic", "Organic" or even "Lite"? And then there's "Human Grade All Natural" - does anyone actually know what all these fancy terms mean? And what about "Raw Dog Food"? Is it what our dogs require, or is it dangerous? How about "Raw Meaty Bones"? Are bones safe? Maybe we have to prepare all of our dog's meals from scratch to ensure its quality and nutritional value?

Choosing the best dog food can be an overwhelming decision - but why does it have to be so hard? I know from personal experience it can be difficult to see through all of the conflicting views, hype, marketing tactics and secrecy surrounding the dog food industry. After years of experimenting with different dog foods and lots of research I have reached an unfortunate conclusion. I feel that the vast majority of the big commercial dog food companies are far more focussed on extracting the money from our pockets rather than the health and wellbeing of our precious dogs.

So when I set out to determine the best dog food available my main focus was always the health, vitality and longevity of my dogs - I want my dogs to thrive. I hope this article will help you to determine the very best puppy food for your dogs and make your feeding decision clearer.

A wholesome well balanced dog food diet promotes: Healthy skin and coat, strong well developed bones, bright clear eyes, firmer stools (and less of them), well defined muscle tone, quality of life and longevity, healthy teeth and gums, fewer trips to your Vet, no bad odor, fewer digestive problems, energy, vitality, fewer behavior problems and over-all health. I'd say it's worth it, wouldn't you? A poor diet leads to an increase in: Cancers, weakened immune system, liver failure, sluggish behavior or hyperactive, putrid gas, diarrhea, dull coat and heavy shedding, epilepsy, vomiting, ear infections, compromised heart and kidneys, stunted growth and weakened bones, bad breath, bowel disease, diabetes, cystitis, cataracts, hypertension, build up in the eyes, arthritis, countless allergies and who knows what else... In my search to find the best dog food available I have narrowed our options down to three broad groups. I've listed them here with a brief explanation and expand on all three options further down this page, including reviews and direct comparisons.

1. Commercial Dog Food: This includes the packaged foods you find at your local supermarket, pet store or veterinarian. Commercial dog food is available in dry, semi dry and wet (canned). All the big names that we know so well are represented in this group, such as Diamond dog food, Pedigree, Iams and Science Diet. Is the best dog food located in this group? Not likely.

2. Raw Dog Food: This is the group growing in popularity. It includes the raw dog food and bones you prepare yourself or pre-packaged diets like BARF and Steve's Real Food 100% natural dog food diet.

3. Homemade Dog Food: Anything you put together yourself at home. Is following good homemade dog food recipes the best choice for our dogs? best dog foods This category of dog food is by far the most popular choice amongst us dog owners. Commercial dog food is so convenient and reasonably priced - but what are the long term implications of feeding it to our dogs, and is it really value for money?

The sad truth is that most of these commercial dog food products (regardless of what fancy name is printed on the label) are rubbish - these big companies are taking us for a ride. It's bad enough that they are happy to deceive us and rip us off blind, but the thing that really gets to me is that they appear to have no regard whatsoever for the health or wellbeing of our dogs.

Not all commercial dog foods are killing our dogs - just most of them. Most of these products are woefully deficient in key nutrients and are chock full of toxic rubbish and fillers (like grain) that provide no nutritional benefit to our dogs.

Some of the ingredients hiding behind the laughably inept labeling laws and fuzzy feel good marketing tactics are: Indigestible waste products, colors, dyes, toxins, pesticides, chemicals, harmful preservatives (BHA, BHT and Ethoxyquin) and antibiotics. It doesn't stop there, then you've got a wide range of dead, diseased, disabled or dying animals prior to their visit to the slaughter house added to the mix. You may even find some so called animal "by-products" and some recently euthanized pet cats or dogs. Basically all of the rubbish that other industries can't or won't use can end up in your dog's dinner bowl. To top it all off any nutrition that is present in this toxic cocktail is then ruined by the cooking processes used.

Just imagine if you or I were able to lay all of the contents of a typical commercial dog food product out on a table in front of us. I've got no doubt we would be at first surprised, then disgusted and angry - have you ever tried to read the label on a can of dog food?

Thankfully not all dog food companies take us for ignorant fools. Some have even realised that we are capable of looking beyond the hype and doing some research of our own - some may even care about our dogs. Andrew Lewis has recently conducted a detailed study into the merits of commercial dog foods. He has now identified 9 brands of commercial dog food that passed his strict criteria and are safe to feed to our dogs. I can't divulge his findings here for copyright reasons (which is fair enough considering that Andrew put in all the time, resources and money to discover the truth). What I can tell you is that I feed two brands of commercial dog food to my dogs - I still do even after reading Andrew's special report;). I feed Wellness (a couple of different varieties) and Canidae. You can access Andrew's special report here - Dog Food Secrets - Confidential Dog Food Report (Gold Package). raw dog food The raw dog food diet is the growth sector within the dog food marketplace. This category includes the raw food you source and prepare yourself or the pre-made and packaged products like Dr. Billinghurst's BARF raw food diet (evolutionary diet), Steve's Real Food for dogs and Primal Pet Foods.

Raw dog food is a fairly broad term as there are many variations on this feeding method. The common thread with raw food enthusiasts is that they believe feeding raw is the most natural way to feed a dog. Raw foodies believe that this is the way dogs have successfully evolved and that eating a raw diet is the way nature intended dogs to get their nutrition. The raw food diet is said to replicate how a dog would eat in the wild. A raw dog food diet is sometimes referred to as an "all natural" diet as ingredients are generally free from chemicals, preservatives, additives, by-products and fillers (like worthless grains).

Some raw food proponents love to give big meaty bones and others won't. The same applies with fruit and vegetables - some people say that vegetable matter is a natural part of a wild dogs diet, gathered from the stomach of their prey. The following is an example of the real whole foods that are included in a raw dog food diet. These ingredients are usually organic or all-natural produce: Chicken, lamb, pork, salmon, turkey, kangaroo, rabbit, quail and organ meat. You may also find raw meaty bones and a long list of fresh fruit and vegetables. Plus you'll find nutritious ingredients such as eggs, kelp, yogurt, flax seed meal and other supplements. Compare this list to what you read on a commercial dog food label - there's simply no comparison.

Raw foodies argue that a raw food diet provides the enzyme rich nutrients and amino acids in a perfect unaltered state - which is easily digested. They believe that the raw dog food diet leads to fewer visits to the Vet, strengthened immune systems and less allergy and disease. They also point to the over-all health and appearance of their dogs for proof that the raw diet is the right way to go. Raw foodies report increased longevity and reproductive capacity in their dogs. Another benefit of feeding raw is healthy teeth and gums and well developed jaws, neck and shoulder muscles (from all the chewing).

On the other hand detractors of feeding raw focus on the danger of foodborne illness through the threat of bacteria like salmonella and E. coli. Some also say that it is difficult to feed a nutritionally balanced meal the raw way.

One tip I would suggest if you are considering the raw feeding option for your dogs is to go out and visit a breeder or friend who already feeds a raw dog food diet. Have a chat with them and take a really good look at their dogs - the health of our dogs is always what matters most.

With all the recent news about the dog food recall and associated concerns with commercial dog foods, the homemade dog food option has really come to the fore.

Preparing your dog's meals from scratch has many benefits, including the complete control of all meals served. You know exactly what goes into every meal (and where it was sourced) and you also know that it has been prepared in a clean environment.

It does take an organized person to set up a homemade feeding plan and then prepare all of the daily meals. The homemade dog food option also comes with the added responsibility of formulating nutritionally balanced meals (proteins, vitamins etc.) and meeting the calorie requirements for your individual dog. If you arm yourself with some good dog food recipes and get into a routine this process is not all that difficult to maintain.

Typical homemade dog meals include big meaty stews, healthy soups, pies, vegetables and maybe some raw bones every now and then.

For hundreds of well thought out and nutritionally balanced dog food recipes check out this resource - Dog Food Secrets. You'll also learn how to calculate the calorie requirements of your dog and discover all of the foods you must avoid feeding. Many dogs who have previously had skin allergies or other common health complaints have thrived when switched over to a good homemade dog food diet. dog food recipes Ok so what does all of this mean? Many people ask what the best dog food is and what I feed to my own dogs. To be honest if I had the time (was more organized) I would prepare all of my dog's meals from scratch, plus add lots of raw meaty bones to their diet. But for the moment I feed my puppies Wellness (they love it) and Canidae to my older dogs . I also toss them some raw bones every few days - they are doing great on this diet. This food is more expensive than most but the health benefits far outweight the added cost. Plus you'll find that you feed less when your dog food is of a high quality and visits to your vet will be greatly reduced.

May 19, how to stop a puppy bite disabling & mouthing | Resolve problems bites puppy

Management and control of puppy biting problems can be a great challenge for us dog lovers. Puppy biting or disabling begins as a bit of fun, but need to quickly control to avoid problems of course.

For the young pups biting is a perfectly natural and essential to go through phase, especially when they are teething.

Puppies love to sink their sharp fangs shortly into the thing during this stage of the dentition, including the hands and the feet of their owners. In some cases is as it has brought a snappy alligator at home, rather than the little puppy have had expected.

The good news is that most of the puppies can be trained to regulate and to minimize biting quite easily. The earlier start to educate your puppy bite inhibition (have a mild mouth), the easier - for all concerned. Stop Puppy Biting Bunch of proven training methods to help correct your puppy behavior problems. To obtain specific techniques that can be used to stop your puppy biting, always keep these general dog behavior training rules in mind: its objective is to start with for teach your puppy to control force his bite. Your puppy littermates will begin this process, and then is up to you to continue with it when your new puppy arrives home. This will ensure (no guarantee) If your dog bite someone in the future that will minimize the damage. When you gave your opinion enough puppy with regard to the strength of its bite only then you can begin to reduce the prevalence of biting behavior. If it detects the scathing problem initially can be easy to rectify. Just try to redirect biting your meat to a toy or chew bone. For very young puppies this method is often all you will need to do. As soon as baby begins to bite the hands only allow a firm "no!" and replace your fingers with the toy chew (or ice cube), if your puppy teething. This is probably the most popular method, and my favorite. Make your puppy I believe that it is affecting every time that he has a password to you. This method replicates how to sort this dogs bite each other. When the puppies are biting and turning each other only stops when a puppy allows a howl. We may use this naturally dogs learn leaving you a Ouch! or a Ahoy! each time one bite of our puppy. The trick is in startle your pet with his voice and then pull and stop playing with your puppy for a while. They will soon learn her calf from when he starts to bite, his playmate (you) disappears. Teach your puppy obedience "Leave It" training command. This method works great but is more suitable for older puppies. In bad cases of scathing as soon as your puppy latches on your hand saying "no!" and quickly put the thumb of his mouth under your tongue and finger underneath your chin. Hold for 10 seconds (not too tightly). This will feel uncomfortable to your puppy and he won't be able to bite him. Again if your puppy has a scathing problem you can try this technique training. Implement a pair of gloves and applies a substance foul tasting (something that your dog does not like). Soon you learn your pet if he bites will not tasty! This method produces a strong negative association your dog every time you decide to bite him. Some dogs are sufficiently intelligent to realize that when you take off your gloves foul, tasting is thin to sink their fangs into the one more time! For age (about 6 months) puppies is a safe technique of fire, to stop the exaggerated puppy.Putting a pinch or retract your puppy and increasingly necklace bites give you a short sharp tug lead. This correction will be an unpleasant Association your dog every time he do muerde. No take him long to detener.Algunos coaches believe this method to be pretty extreme, and I agree that would only urge, in very rare circumstances – I have never needed go to this nivel.Creo which is much more effective to educate your puppy rather than inflicting punishment or trying to extinquish behavior completely.

How to stop a puppy bite - these methods They have been recommended to me, but I never tried them myself:

If you're worried that can have a puppy too aggressive in their hands, please seek the advice of an experienced trainer behaviorist or animal dog.

As I mentioned earlier, the most important piece of advice regardless of which method of training that is chosen is to be consistent and provide information to clear your puppy needs to learn.puppy biting problems

A Dachshund Puppy makes a magnificent family companion dog.

Dachsies are much loved right around the world for their cheeky playful personality, distinctive good looks and beautiful affectionate nature. They are lively little characters who are full of spunk and attitude!

Dachsies are adaptable to most living conditions which makes them a popular choice with apartment dwellers. A Dachshund Puppy (or older Dachsie) is at his/her happiest when inside spending time with their human family. They love to be involved in absolutely everything, whether it be fun and games with the kids or simply curled up next to you on the sofa. long hair dachshund This wonderful dog breed was developed hundreds of years ago in Germany. They were originally bred to hunt the burrowing badgers. The size, shape and tenacity of Dachsies made them ideally suited to this purpose and more than a match for any badger. You'll find that your Dachshund Puppy still retains many of these hunting instincts even today. There's no mistaking a Dachshund Puppy when you see one striding down the street. Everyone notices a Dachsie and more often than not will come up and make a big fuss over them.

Dachsies are low to the ground with a long muscular body and big drooping ears. They strut along with their barrel chest thrust forward and head held high. Up close you are immediately drawn to their warm oval shaped eyes and intelligent expression.

Dachsies come in three different coat varieties - the short-hair (which is most popular), the long-hair and the wire-hair. Dachshunds are considered to be moderate shedders. Depending on where you live there are two or three different sizes. In the US it's a Miniature Dachshund (less than 11 pounds) and a Standard Dachshund (16-28 pounds). dachshund picture All Dachsies are individuals, they have their own special and unique temperament. Generally speaking though they are mischievous, tenacious, intelligent, very affectionate and many have an independent streak. They are also playful little dogs - even when you don't think it appropriate! They crave human companionship and don't enjoy being locked outside or isolated from their human family.

The temperament and bahavior habits of your Dachshund Puppy are largely determined by: Where you purchase your puppy - always go to a reputable Dachshund Breeder if possible. The early socialization you provide (your Dachshund Puppy Breeder begins this process). The obedience training you and your dog perform together.

When given proper socialization Dachshund Puppies are good with children and get along well with other household pets.

Some Dachsie owners suggest that their dogs tend to bond more closely with one family member over others. This may be true but I wouldn't classify Dachshies as a "one person dog" - they love the whole family too much.

Dachshund Puppies develop into very effective watchdogs. They are ever alert and have well developed senses. The deep (and loud!) hound like bark is enough to raise the alarm if an intruder is lurking around your property.

Dachsies display many terrier like traits. The most obvious is their fascination with digging in the garden - if you value your well manicured garden then a Dachshund Puppy may not be a good option for you. You can read a detailed article I wrote for tips on how to help prevent or redirect your Dachshund's digging problem here - stop dachshund puppy digging

The long-haired Dachshund is generally thought to be more docile or even tempered than the short-hair and wire Dachshunds. As I mentioned earlier they are all individuals though - regardless of coat variety and size. dachshund puppy Dachshunds are a pretty sturdy dog breed. They typically (with a bit of luck) live an active and healthy 14-16 years.

To give yourself the best chance of bringing a physically and mentally sound Dachshund puppy into your life it is essential to purchase your dog from a reputable Dachshund puppy breeder. A good breeder genuinely cares for the future of the breed and carefully plans each mating from the highest quality breeding stock. Your Dachshund puppy breeder is also in charge of the crucial role of beginning your puppy's early socialization. Please don't take the risk of going to a puppy mill - their primary concern is getting the money out of your pocket.

Your Veterinarian and Dachshund puppy breeder is a good place to receive specific health care advice. Below is a list of Doxie health concerns that you should at least be aware of: The most notable concern stems from the Dachshund's unusually long back. This makes them susceptible to spinal problems such as ruptured disks. This condition is most probably a genetic disorder but you can help to reduce the risk of injury. It's important to keep your Dachshie's weight at a healthy level (for many reasons really) and also to minimize the amount of jumping and stair climbing your Dachshie does. Be sensible about it, supervise as much as possible, but remember they are still dogs and will do doggy stuff. Dachshies can be susceptible to Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA). This is an inherited condition which is a degenerative disease of the retina - in some cases it can even lead to complete blindness. PRA is especially prevalent in mini Dachshunds. Other health problems you may encounter are urinary tract problems, heart disease and diabetes. Let's be honest here, training a Dachshund Puppy is not the easiest task in the world. At times you will swear that it is your Dachsie training you rather than the other way around!

It's not because your Dachshund Puppy lacks any intelligence - in fact they are a clever breed. But they do have an independent streak and can be a little stubborn during the training process. This is not to say they can't be trained.

Dachsies respond very well to positive non violent, reward based training methods. Be sure to be consistent in your training, use plenty of encouragement and repetition. Short sharp training sessions are best. You'll find food to be a great motivator to your Dachshund Puppy! There is no place for (and no need for) harsh punishment or "corrections" when training a Dachsie.

House training a Dachshund Puppy is said to be a fairly difficult process. In truth if you find a good Dachshund Puppy Potty Training Schedule and stick to it, you will achieve the desired result. It just takes some commitment, consistency and a touch of patience to do it properly. You can find a proven potty training schedule in this comprehensive training resource - Dachshund puppy house training.

In order for your Dachshund Puppy to become a responsible and trusted member of society you will want to teach them some proper household etiquette and basic obedience training. Dachsies are more than capable of picking up these behaviors in quick time.

Household Etiquette - This is the process of setting the boundaries of acceptable behavior for you puppy and developing good behavior habits right from the start. At the same time it is the process of preventing problem behaviors before they arise. I'm talking about things like potty training, puppy biting, crate training, destructive chewing, digging, excessive barking and begging for food. All things that will help you and your Dachsie live happily together.

Basic Obedience Training - Some commands that you'll find particularly useful for you and your Dachshund puppy are the come or recall command, down, stay and how to walk nicely on a loose leash.

If you plan to train your Dachshund Puppy at home I recommend you take the time to read, learn and implement these Dachshund training methods - Dachshund Care & Training. dachshund puppy for sale

It soon becomes clearly apparent that puppy house training is an urgent priority and the number one thing to teach our new housemates.

You'll find lots of puppy house training articles and theories across the net and in books everywhere, but I'm pleased to say that I've got a method that has never let me down. The potty training technique I have come to rely on and trust requires a fair degree of commitment to begin with but the rewards are quick and last forever. My veterinarian first told me about this potty training method which could be summed up as follows:Closely monitor your puppy to prevent messy mistakes, enthusiastically reward desired behavior every time, and if a mistake happens work out where you went wrong.Puppy House Training - General Rules

Owning a puppy is a big commitment for all family members, especially in the first few days and weeks.

Puppy potty training is not a race, the key is to prevent mistakes and establish good habits early - dogs are creatures of habit.puppy house training

From your dogs point of view there is no right or wrong place to go to the toilet, they feel like going and just do it. It is our job to clearly communicate and reinforce where it is acceptable to eliminate and also where it is not acceptable.

Opening your back door every couple of hours to let your puppy out will not house train your puppy.

A puppy's natural instinct is to keep their bedding/sleeping area clean - the potty training method outlined below utilizes this knowledge to our advantage.

No matter how attentive and diligent you are in the house training process there is bound to be the odd slip up. Don't worry about it just ensure that you clean mistakes up thoroughly, including the use of an odor neutralizer to take away any lingering smell.

My puppy house training strategy involves close supervision and confinement to start with but only so we can allow our puppies greater freedom and much sooner.

Understand your puppy's capabilities and be realistic, keep in mind you are dealing with a very young animal. Young puppies can only hold on for so long before they need to go, they don't have much control early on. As a general rule a puppy can hold on an hour for every month of his/her age, plus another hour. This means that a 2 month old puppy can be expected to hold on for three hours and at 3 months old this same pup could be expected to hold on for four hours at a time.

Develop a food and water schedule. Each day feed at the same time (never close to bed time) and take away your dogs water bowl before you go to bed (don't forget to put it back first thing in the morning!). You'll develop a routine this way and "what goes in on schedule comes out on schedule", if you know what I mean...Physical Punishment Is Never An
Option In The House Training Process!boxer house trainingPuppy House Training - Step by Step ProcessThis method is for when you are at home with your puppy, follow it as closely as you possibly can.

Equipment you'll need:

I prefer to use a good quality crate. Ensure that it is comfortable, safe and the right dimensions for your puppy. You can read a detailed crate training article I wrote here - puppy crate training -or-

You can also set up a small pen area with a comfortable dog bed, fresh water and a couple of chew toys (like a food stuffed kong toy). Do not put a doggy toilet in this pen area.

Choose the spot outside where you would like your puppy to go to the toilet (eliminate).

Keep your puppy in his/her crate, pen area or even tethered to a chair where you are working. Your puppy cannot have free run of the house at this early stage, he must be confined. Every 60 minutes take your puppy straight to the designated toilet area outside. Carry your puppy or walk out on leash.

When you reach the toilet area walk back and forth or circle around and around. At the same time say and repeat a cue word you would like to attach to the act of your dog eliminating. I use "hurry up" but just pick out a cue word or short phrase and stick with it. In your dogs mind you are building an association between the cue "hurry up!" and him emptying out. This is the first obedience training command you will teach your young pup.

If your pup does eliminate continue to repeat your cue word and the instant your dog finishes doing his business enthusiastically praise and reward him with a small tasty treat. Make it clear that you are very happy with him and that he is the best little puppy on the block! If after 3-4 minutes of circling around your puppy shows no signs of needing to eliminate take him back inside (put in crate or pen) and try again in about twenty minutes.

Immediately after a successful toilet trip outside you can allow your puppy some free play time (under supervision) in the house. Just spend some time enjoying the company of your puppy, then place him back in his crate or pen area.

Continue with this 60 minute puppy house training schedule, you'll be rewarded for sticking to it. Remember that you are trying to prevent any mistakes and at the same time establish good habits in your little puppy.

"What about overnight?" I hear you ask. Yes well, firstly do not feed your puppy close to bedtime and take away his water before you go to bed (don't forget to put it back first thing in the morning). You'll need to set your alarm clock to go off once and possibly twice throughout the night. This is an important step, just take your puppy out to the toilet area as usual and then hop back into bed. When your puppy is young it is physically impossible for him to hold on all night, but before long you will both be sleeping peacefully right through the night.

In addition to your 60 minute schedule it is important to take your puppy outside after each meal time (most puppies go to the potty within 15 minutes of eating).

That's the puppy house training process, follow it consistently and I'm sure you'll experience pleasing results. When you are not home you will need to set up an area with comfortable bedding, water, toys and a toilet. Place the indoor doggy toilet at the opposite side to the bedding in your puppy's living area. When you arrive home remove the toilet area inside and follow the potty training method detailed above.dog-house-trainingPuppy House Training Process - Teaching Your Puppy To "ask" To Go OutsideIf you aren't able to install a doggy door it is handy if you teach your dog the right way to let you know he wants to go outside. Do this by hanging a Poochie-Bell on a piece of string attached to the door handle (at the level of your puppy's nose).

Follow the puppy house training schedule as detailed above but now add the following: Each time you get to the door to go outside give the bell a bit of a shake and say "go potty". Do this every time you take your puppy outside to the toilet for a week or two.

After a week or so when you arrive at the door say "go potty" but don't touch the bell. You want your puppy to give it a nudge, if he does, give lots of enthusiastic praise and quickly open the door. If your puppy doesn't nudge the bell after standing at the door for 10 seconds, shake the bell yourself while saying "go potty".

Keep trying this procedure every time you go outside until your dog "gets it". With most dogs it doesn't take long at all.

Eventually your dog will make his way to the door and tap the bell every time he needs to go outside to the toilet.

Take a bow is a very cool dog trick to teach your puppy.

The "bow" is not only a fun dog trick but it also has a worthwhile practical application as well. When your dog is in the bow position other dogs interpret this as being a submissive posture and one that encourages play. This is great if the tension between two dogs needs to be eased. Also, if you have any people around who may be a little nervous at the sight of your dog then a well timed "take a bow" can work wonders at putting them at ease.

Most of all the take a bow dog trick is simply a fun trick that is very appropriate to finish off any "performance" by your dog. What performer doesn't finish off a great show by bowing to his/her adoring fans?

There are two excellent methods for teaching a solid and reliable "take a bow". When deciding which method is going to best suit you, always keep your dog in mind. Try to make it easy for your dog and work with his/her natural traits, instincts and behaviors. In order to utilize this first technique your dog must already naturally perform the behavior you wish to put on cue. In this case it would mean that your dog stretches out into a bow like position when he/she wakes from a nap.

If you have a dog that naturally stretches out into the "take a bow" position (like my Whippet, Pocky) all you need to do is capture/pinpoint the stretch by marking it with a "click" and then reinforce it by tossing a tasty treat to your dog. This will ensure that your dog offers the "bow" more often, at which time you can begin to put it on verbal cue.

This is the method I used in the video below to teach my Shih-Tzu, Macy the "Take A Bow". Using a target stick and dog training clicker you slowly build the trick/behavior piece by piece using baby steps. Then when we have the behavior established we attach our verbal cue to it. Below is an example of the step by step way we put the "take a bow" dog trick together. It may take you and your dog a few days or even a few weeks to work your way through the following steps. Eventually you'll have it on cue - ready to be called upon anytime the both of you wish to "show off" in front of your friends. It doesn't matter how long it takes to perfect the trick - tricks are purely for fun, it is not a race.

As with all new tricks or behaviors we start out by making it very simple for our dogs and then slowly, one by one we add new variables in order to get closer to the completed/finished behavior.

With your dog standing in front of you take the target stick from the level of your dog's nose and move it towards the floor. If your dog follows the stick down at all you should immediately click and treat the movement. Continue repeating step 1 but now you should only click and treat your dog when his/her elbows bend a little and move down toward the floor. Don't worry about your dog's back legs at this stage. To earn a click and treat your dog must now bend his elbows until they touch the floor. Even a very quick or slight touch is good enough to begin with. Just make sure that your timing of the "click" is precise - remember that the "click" marks the behavior in your dog's mind that you want repeated. Now you should only click and treat your dog when his/her elbows are touching the floor and his back legs are standing tall. If he collapses into the "down" position he does not earn a treat. See troubleshooting below if your dog continues to collapse his back legs. Now we add some duration to the process. Continue as you have been in step 4 only now you withhold the click and treat for a second or two. Your dog will stay in the "Take A Bow" position until he hears the click. Build this duration slowly over a few training sessions - mix it up, keep your dog guessing. Now that you have the basic behavior and your dog can hold the position for at least a few seconds you should begin to attach your cue word. I use "stretch" but you can use whatever you like including "take a bow". Simply say your cue "stretch" immediately before you proceed just as you have been in the previous steps. The process goes like this, say "stretch" then immediately move the target stick down, then click and treat as normal. You are building an association in your dog's mind between your cue "stretch" and the act of getting into the "take a bow" position. It's now time to fade the use of the target stick and rely more heavily on your verbal cue. Do this by shortening the stick, taking it away as soon as your dog is getting into the bow position and by making smaller less obvious movements with it. Watch the video above for a clearer illustration of this process in action. Now take the target stick away completely. Your dog should now be getting into the "take a bow" position on verbal cue only. It may take a while for your dog to make the leap from following the target stick to responding solely to your verbal cue. Keep practicing!! Now that the "take a bow" behavior is established in its basic form and you have it on cue, you can fade out the use of the clicker and treats (remember that if you do "click" you must always treat!). Do some repetitions where you are click and treating and then some that go untreated - once again, mix it up. You should pretty much be set by now, all you need to do is take your show on the road! Practice in different locations and with a wide variety of distractions around you. This will ensure that wherever you are and whatever is happening around you, your dog will always respond to your "take a bow" cue. Note: Dogs don't generalize well, they need to be taught the same behavior in each different location and with different circumstances at play. If You Like Positive, Reward Based Training Methods,
This Resource Is For You
The most common problem you are likely to encounter when teaching this dog trick is that your dog's back legs will continue to collapse when you require them to stand tall. This can be addressed by: When your dog performs a bow (or part of one) "click" it to mark the desired behavior and immediately toss the treat away from your dog. This will get your dog into the habit of not collapsing into the "down" position to accept and eat his treat. Instead he will keep his back legs extended in anticipation of setting off after the treat. When your dog comes back to you after collecting the treat he is now standing in the perfect position in front of you to begin his next repetition (not lying there looking up at you which often happens). If the above method does not stop your dog from collapsing his back legs, try this. When your dog is standing in front of you ready to practice some "Take A Bows" place a rolled up towel just in front of his back feet under his belly. This will prevent him from collapsing all the way down to the floor. Most dogs will stand tall at the back in order to prevent their belly coming into contact with the towel. For small dogs you can simply put your hand under your dog's belly - this should produce the same result. Don't move through the steps too quickly. If your dog is ever confused and seems to be "losing his way" you will need to make it easier for your dog by going back a step or two, until he is comfortable and confident again. When teaching any new dog trick or behavior it is important to keep training sessions short, sharp and always fun. When you are building any new behavior (such as the "Take A Bow") you should only introduce one new variable / requirement per session. For example while working through the steps outlined above you would not try to add duration to the procees at the same time you attempt to add your verbal cue word. Whilst it's important not to work your way too quickly through the steps it's also just as crucial to not go too slowly. Keep a close eye on your dog's progress and continue to stimulate and challenge him/her throughout the training process. If you progress too slowly through the steps you run the risk of your dog becoming bored and frustrated.

Good luck with your dog trick training. In my experience teaching tricks is one of the most enjoyable and rewarding activities you can do with your dog.

Firstly, the sensors in the dog collar may indicate when the dog is barking, and every time that the dog ladre, electronic dog collar emits a noise that dogs can hear ultrasound but not human beings, leave them of barking.

The second version of this necklace works slightly differently when the barking dog, a spray of citronella, which is painless and harmless, is released and surprise your perro.El element of surprise is enough to disrupt the dog in the middle of bark. Before long, most dogs learn to remain silent while wearing the necklace.

Generally accepts that there is no feeling of traumatising or unwanted dog side effects or his sense of the olfato.Si want that your pet to express themselves as before (to protect the House when you're stay away or at night, etc) all you have to do is remove the collar.

Another type of electronic collar dog who would not recommend requires that the owners have an electronic fence installed in his jardín.A despite there are packages that allow you to do it yourself, can be complicated, so unless you have experience doing that, hire a professional to install it.

Electronic fences are invisible fences that curb a dog out of the advantage of being invisible to those people that don't like the look of the cercas.Cuando propiedad.Tienen a dog leads an electronic dog collar and goes too close to the parameters out of the electronic fence, dog is met by an electric discharge.

There are two ways that are operated electronic collars dog, self-employed, or by a remote control that goes in the neck for the propietario.estos necklaces types may appear to have been useful in dog training, but as electrical discharges that issue I don't think regret that should be used by responsables.A owners receive electrical discharge is not large, there are still alternatives to teaching a dog don't have to do something like the distraction with a noise like agitation or dropping a bottle of empty plastic half filled with stones.

Summary should enjoy building a relationship with your pet through training and avoid anything as electric fences which can damage or make your pet cautious or nervous.

Choosing the right personality of his dog dog collars

In many areas of the United States, there are laws that require dogs sport appropriate necklaces dog with identification and wear at all times when outside the home. This is to have a firm place to attach a strap, and also, in order to provide identification in the instance as your best friend never is separated from you.

Contrary to popular belief, dog collars are not the sort of thing just of exits and grab one of; each dog has a different need when it is dog collars and this need can make a difference in the daily activity of your dog, level of obedience and size.

Leather dog collars

Leather dog collars are a popular stylish option for any canine. They are a little on the expensive side at least when it is genuine leather, but pet owners get what you pay. These necklaces are ideal for larger dogs that tend to want to walk to their owners instead of being walked themselves, as leather is durable and lasting.

Beware of prone dog in the water with the collar leather, though. Water can be smooth and dry even the priciest of leather necklaces put you in a potentially complicated situation if your dog decides to pursue some day after a squirrel and gives the necklace.Polished help, but if your dog anything, you should consider a fabric dog collar.

Fabric dog collars

Thus, fabric collars are great. Many pet owners hesitate to go after these because leather necklaces are much more visually appealing and tend to last longer, but tissue necklaces are the best choice for puppies who enjoy an occasional dip now another vez.Nunca weakened the fabric of the humidity, and that is more than what is true for most of necklaces of leather on the market.

String choking collars for dogs

Retract necklaces are great options for pets by so have a little more strength, as American Pit Bull Terrier, Rottweiler, German Shepherd and great danés.estos can carry addition of collars in leather or fabric, but should be used as main neck on the strap.

These necklaces are say are a bit cruel, but are excellent when it comes to training and are not cruel at all - it might be surprised by things that your dog can tomar.Nunca leave your dog unattended with this kind of necklace, as it creates a very dangerous situation that all pet owners want to avoid.

Find the suitable for your pet dog collar sounds easy, but there are so many to choose can be a little abrumadora.Usted may be tempted to go with the cheapest, and while the price is always a consideration, no sense in paying half of the clip you need for a necklace that you have to replace three or four times per year. Do you know how to spot potential health problems in your dog, treat common problems yourself and recognize when a health issue requires Veterinary care?

Jump straight to the specific dog health care information you require:

Our dogs rely heavily on us to look after their health issues. Caring for our dogs is a responsibility we all take on board when we bring a dog into our lives. But dog health care is not necessarily a subject we all have expertise in - I know I didn't when I got my first young puppy.

Over the years I've put together a health care program or strategy I follow to help manage my dog's health issues. The dog health care program I have outlined below is an ongoing process of maintenance which relies on careful observation, being proactive and is designed to prevent major health issues from arising. It also addresses how to effectively diagnose and treat dog health problems when they do arise - either yourself, or by your Vet when necessary.

These Are The Steps Involved In The Dog Health Care Program I Follow To Safeguard My Dogs:

The dog health care strategy I follow is an ongoing part of what I call "responsible dog ownership" - I feel that it helps to keep my dogs happy, healthy and free from unnecessary pain or stress. Dog Health Problems What Can We Do To Keep Our Dogs In Peak
Condition & Out Of The Veterinary Office? The first step in our dog health care program is to simply make our dogs feel comfortable and safe in our home environment. This requires you to always provide your dog with essentials such as a warm, draft free and comfortable dog bed, fresh water and a couple of chew toys. It's also important that we provide an area in our homes that is off limits to everyone else except for our dogs - a place where they can have a "time out" to relax in peace and quiet.

Another proactive and preventive health care measure you can take is to "puppy proof" your home and property. Basically this means that you make your home and property a secure area, free from any hazards that may be dangerous to your dog. You can read more about this subject here - how to puppy proof your home.

The dog food or nutrition you provide to your dog is the number one factor in determining the health, wellbeing and longevity they enjoy. The nutrition your dog receives affects every aspect of his/her life. The role nutrition plays in your dog's health and behavior habits cannot be overstated. How do you provide wholesome, nutritionally balanced meals to your dog? Read this article and watch the free video for more dog food advice - what is the best dog food?. Regular bathing and thorough grooming is a crucial element to this dog health care program. A bath with a gently medicated soap has many health benefits to your dog. It assists in flea control, prevents numerous skin conditions, identifies ticks and mites plus it makes your dog look beautiful!

A good solid brushing every few days is extremely beneficial to your dog's health. It stimulates blood flow to the skin which helps to prevent eczema, hot spots and many skin related health problems. Of course it also keeps your dog's hair in peak condition and free from tangles or matting.

Every few days I like to inspect my dogs all over by running my hands over them while closely observing them. You'll find that your dog actually looks forward to these "maintenance" sessions - I'm sure my Shih-Tzu Macy simply believes she is getting a massage!

What to look out for when inspecting your dog: Check all over for cuts, lumps, bumps, hot spots or any tender areas. To fully understand what these symptoms mean and most importantly how to properly treat, them you may require a dog health care resource such as this - Veterinary Secrets Revealed. Take special notice of how your dog reacts when you run your hands over different areas - any wincing or flinching requires further attention. Be sure to check your dog's teeth and gums. Every week or so I give my dog's teeth a clean with a moist towel or doggie toothbrush. Gum disease is a serious matter so pay extra attention to this area - any changes you notice to the gums should be investigated. Check your dog's feet and nails. Make sure the pads under food are strong, clean and healthy. Look out for anything (like grass seeds) lodged in-between the toes. Also make it part of your dog's health care routine to keep the nails neat and tidy. Ears also need to be checked for any build up of moisture or infection. Any smell coming from the ears is a telltale sign that all is not well. During these inspections or other times when you are observing your dog be sure to be on the look out for any changes in behavior. Your dog cannot talk to you (not in our human language anyway!) and may even try to hide health problems from you, so it's up to you to observe him/her closely for any signs of discomfort.

Some early signs or symptoms which may point to a potential health problem could be vomiting, lack of energy, shaking, diarrhea, drinking more water than usual or lameness. To properly diagnose and deal with these early symptoms you may need a good resource to guide you such as Veterinary Secrets Revealed. One of the most valuable topics covered in this health guide is the clear step-by-step explanation of how to thoroughly examine your dog from tip-to-tip.

The real benefit of continually observing and examining your dog is that you will pick up on potential health problems before they escalate into something more serious. The earlier you identify any potential health problems the less your dog will experience unnecessary pain and the easier the problem will be to remedy. During these regular examination sessions you can also administer any medication that your dog may require. It's worth learning how to give your dog tablets the quick and easy way. Exercise is an absolutely essential ingredient in any dog health care program. Apart from being a whole lot of fun, exercise provides a great outlet for all of your dog's energy. Exercise keeps your dog in good physical shape and goes a long way to prevent obesity. Canine obesity is slow and painful death sentence for dogs. It greatly increases the risk of many dog health problems such as arthritis, heart disease and diabetes.

Exercise can be any number of fun activities such as long walks on leash, a trip to the beach, a game of fetch or anything else you can think of. There's no substitute for exercise. I like to play games that stimulate my dog's natural instincts and drives such as "hide n' seek" and throwing the ball at the park - they love it.

What does obedience training have to do with your dog's health I hear you ask? The answer is plenty. A trained dog who you have under voice control is in a much safer position than an untrained dog. A trained dog can be included in all family outings and activities which has got to be a good thing for their health. Plus training your dog provides unmatched physical and mental stimulation to your dog - it gets them thinking, moving and having fun. Clicker training is my favorite way to shape the behavior of my own dogs. It's one thing to recognize a potential health problem but what do you do when your dog is actually injured or sick? For common health problems such as nicks, licking problems and minor eye irritations you need to be able to quickly and confidently apply some natural home remedies. You can learn how to diagnose and treat many common dog health problems in this health care guide Veterinary Secrets Revealed. This will save you and your dog many unnecessary visits to the Vet and will save you money in the process. Being able to administer first aid to your dog (and others) is a great skill to have in your bag of tricks.

Just as important as recognizing and treating minor health problems is being able to quickly identify those symptoms that need to be brought straight to the attention of your Veterinarian. Dog Health Care We have to be honest with ourselves, we can't do everything for our dogs - some dog health issues must be addressed by qualified and experienced professionals. This is where your Vet steps in. Your Veterinarian is a vital part of your dog's health care program. Having a good Vet in your corner, one who you know and trust is a valuable asset and is very reassuring. What dog health issues should your Vet help you with? Puppy shots or vaccinations protect your dog from many diseases such as parvovirus, hepatitis, canine distemper and rabies. The diseases you need to guard against differ depending on where you live so having a reputable Vet to advise you is invaluable.

My Vet recommends a full course of puppy shots up to 1 year of age and then a booster every 3 years - some Vets suggest an annual booster. Don't take your young dog out and about in the community before he/she is safely protected from disease - this is usually about four months of age, but once again ask your Vet.

Please neuter your dog - we have too many dogs as it is, don't add to the problem. By neutering your dog you will also help to prevent many serious health problems from arising later on in your dog's life. If you dog is pregnant read this article - dog pregnancy. Controlling fleas and worms is one of the biggest health issues we have to face as dog owners. That's why I like to put my trust in a qualified Vet when dealing with the prevention and treatment of these harmful parasites. Your Vet will recommend a suitable flea control and worming (heartworms, tapeworms, roundworms..) schedule - then it's up to you to stick with it. You will probably need to administer monthly worming tablets to your dog and maybe other medication - it's no big deal and it's more than worthwhile.

Also keep in mind that it's not only your dog who needs to be treated for the fleas. You may need a flea management program which covers your entire home, including your dog's bedding and the carpets.

As part of your dog health care program it's a good idea to schedule an annual Vet inspection or "wellness test". Your Vet will conduct a series of tests for this purpose - it's a great proactive and preventive health measure. A good Vet will be on the lookout for any irregularities in the test results and will also check your dog for any sign of breed specific health problems. In the unfortunate case of serious injury or illness you will need a Vet who you trust and can rely on to save your dog's life. It helps if the Vet is familiar with your dog. When you are first choosing your Veterinarian consider one who is open long hours and has the ability to perform emergency surgery should the need arise. If it gets to this stage hopefully you will have suitable dog insurance in place to ease the financial strain - the truth about dog health insurance.

One last thing! There have been numerous scientific studies undertaken which confirm the health benefits we receive from having a dog in our lives. So I think it's only fair that we return the favor by giving our dogs the very best health care we possibly can. Best of luck (and health) with your dog....
